Feeding a planet of 9 billion, with nutritious food, while preserving the environment, water resources and limit energy consumption. This is the greatest challenge in developing countries. And not only. While global health slowly improves, food security and food sovereignty are at stakes in many African, Asian and Central American countries.
What can be done to face this challenge? The project “Food4” has the goal to find the best solutions and the best cases adopted by NGOs and EU cooperation and development offices in seven key countries, chosen with FAO’s experts. We will cover food value chain in Ethiopia, sustainable fishery in Myanmar, alternative cultivation system integrate with renewable energy and urban garden in Senegal, forestry and agriculture in Bolivia, nutrient food in school in Egypt, environmental friendly agricultural system in Mozambique, climate change resilience in Bhutan/Nepal.
The key of this project is: IMPACT. In fact Food4 is not only an innovative reporting on the best cases of projects aimed to improve food security, using multimedia features. We want to go big by showcasing these stories in September at the global EXPO2015 in Milano, which slogan is “Feeding the Planet”, thanks to several contacts the author has with the organizers.
We will produce 1) a multimedia exhibition in one of the EXPO space, which can guarantee a great exposure: organizers are expecting up to 30 millions visitors. 2) a exhibition in October at the Festival of Ethic Photography in Lodi (105K visitor in 2014), that focus on pictures and development (featuring many work on fighting poverty, and other UN goals). Both exhibitions have great visibility.
These exhibition will feature (with different take) content realized during reporting: stories describing the project, photos, an maps. We want to inspire development policy expert (numerous will be attending EXPO), NGOs workers, as well normal citizens, so to educate them on global challenges and smart solutions, while reaching out to newspaper readers. While the Expo is focuses on nutrition, food products and fine dining, we believe that the topic of food security has been left in the corner. For this very reason FOOD4 is highly relevant and can have great impact.
To better understand the challenge we will distribute at the exhibitions and through the media partner of this project the Food4 Atlas, a 48 pages book with maps and texts, made with cartographer Riccardo Pravettoni, both in English and Italian.
Maps will represent topics as: undernourishment, obesity, land use, food staples transitional financial exchanges, food prices, agricultural areas impacted by climate change.
The www.festivaldellafotografiaetica.it will be dedicate to more specialized audiences and will discuss the relevance of pictures and multimedia in development storytelling.
