Since the colonization of America and Africa, European metropolis have used these countries as suppliers of raw products and cheap workforce (as slaves or workers under poor labor conditions). Weather conditions and big extensions of productive land have favored the creation of big plantations of sugar, cocoa, tobacco, bananas, coffee and palm oil.
In 2014, EU countries imported more than 20 million tonnes of these seven products. Most came from developing countries. Even today, many voices protest (1) against laboral conditions in big plantations, long day working hours and low wages, against (2) ownership of this terrains by a selected group of big companies and families, and against (3) environmental damages of intensive farming.
“The Plantation That Consumes Europe” is a data driven and cross-border investigation that explores the hidden sides of the Latin American and African plantations' agricultural model that feeds western countries.
